No Plastic Bags On Mondays campaign kicks off on 7th June 2010. In support of City Hall’s aim to reduce the use of plastic bags in Kota Kinabalu city, G-Mart stores will lend its support to this Environmental-friendly initiative.
The aim is to control the excessive use of plastic bags, which are non-biodegradable and poses a long term effect on the environment. Plastics are an essential part of our lives, and it can be found in every industrial product, food packaging, domestic products, and even medical products. However, plastic packaging adds to the cost of the products while at the same time ensuring it is fit for human consumption. We have to strike a balance, and design better packaging that are good for consumers as well as the environment.
So starting from Monday, customers will be asked to pay 20 sens for every plastic bag they get from G-Mart. The 20 sens collected will go towards funding environmental friendly activities by City Hall. Most leading hypermarkets, supermarkets and superstores will participate in this campaign. What customers will do is to bring their own plastic bags and reuse them. This is inline with the Go Green initiative of Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle.
