Sunset Over Mengkabong River

There is a beautiful spot to catch the sunset in Tuaran. Best of all, you can do so standing on a bridge, with Mount Kinabalu as a backdrop, and a beautiful river view in front of you. I have driven along this road countless of time, but never did have the chance to take a photo. Luckily, a friend and a colleague of mine did, and she graciously allowed me to publish her photo.

Taken around sunset, you can see why Sabah is such a beautiful place to visit. Although many people are now living in urban and suburban areas, they maintain close ties with their relatives in the villages (kampung). Often, during public holidays and festivals, you can see the long exodus of people going back to their village. In Malay, it is called Balik Kampung. And it is a sentiment shared by the Kadazans and local tribes, and the Chinese people. Life in the rural village brings back many fond memories for a lot of my friends. Especially the kampung way of life, without the stress of city life, where you can hear birds singing, enjoy the sunset, where time is measured differently.

These photographs were taken along the bridge over Mengkabong river, in Tuaran. It is just after Rasa Ria Resort on the route from Tuaran.
