Sightseeing Semporna With My Princess

The day after the dinner, I drove to Semporna with my wife and my princess. Semporna is one of my favorite town in Sabah, and it is only an hour away from Tawau. We were there to spend some time with my wife’s sister. Incidently, my sister in law owns and operate Semporna Mini-market. It has been some time since we last went to Semporna but I guess nothing much has changed.

Since I had the use of a Toyota Prado, the drive was quite comfortable. The scenery on the route to Semporna is basically palm trees on both sides of the road. As you can see in the photo below, there isn’t any streetlights. So not many people will make the drive at night unless they had to.

The First Place To Visit
The first stop for most visitors to Semporna is undoubtedly the floating village. Home to the Dragon Inn, it is also a popular place for locals to visit. As far as I know, every visitor to Semporna has been here. There is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop located here.

There are also plenty of tour operators located here, so this is a logical place to come to on your visit. The local tour operators offices are located in the front of this village, on the right hand side of the village. The Pearl City Restaurant was empty of customers when we arrived at about 4.00pm. But come evening, it will have its share of diners. The seafood here is very fresh, most of which are kept alive in the waters around the restaurant. Not as damaging to wallet as it can be if you were in Kota Kinabalu.

The Dragon Inn
This Inn is built on stilts above the sea, and while it looks quite rudimentary, it is air-conditioned. Admittedly, my last stay was almost 10 years ago, and I don’t think it has been refurbished at all. I did not stay here this time as I knew my Princess would not enjoy it as much as I would – with her being a city girl and all. The rooms are quite dark, and the attached shower and toilet is outside the room. It is private, but at the same time, airy and you can see the sea as you go about your business.

I stayed here when I was with the retail group that opened the first modern retail superstore in Semporna. We got back way after midnight, and as you sleep you can feel the room swaying along with the current. My room mate woke me up in the dark hours to see the sun rise and it was absolutely beautiful.

Anyway, the room rates starts at RM77 for a room with 2 single beds.

Semporna is where the gateway to the world renowned Sipadan and Mabul islands. You can also choose to stay overnight at Mataking island. Everyone who has been to these islands universally agree that it is stunning, even if you do not scuba dive. Even the locals. I know a local dive master called John, and he always have lots of entertaining stories about diving in Sipadan.
