On my visit to Semporna in October, we ended up in Mabul Cafe for dinner. Not to be confused with Mabul Island, Mabul Cafe is located in Semporna, in the vicinity of Scuba Junkies. To get there, head towards the floating village (where Dragon Inn is) and take the junction on the left. Made up of modern concrete shophouses, as opposed to the older part of town which still has many wooden shophouses.
We stayed in Seafeast Hotel, quite close to where Mabul Cafe is. So after checking in, we met up with our relatives and friends for dinner.
This is my first time to Mabul Cafe, it is one of only the few places you can hang out in Semporna. It is on the first floor, so you go past a few tanks and freezers of fishes and seafood. Up a flight of stairs, and into a open air cafe which really invites you to just sit down and chill.
We had the air-conditioned rooms, where 20 adults and kids will be having dinner. Needless to say, the seafood is amazing, and flavors were brilliant. A few friends have been there for close to a week, and I heard they have eaten RM 1,000 in shrimps and crabs alone.
Be adventurous when it comes to food, then you can really experience the flavors of Semporna. We had prawns in spicy sauce, fried cuttlefish, steamed fish and just about every kind of seafood you can think of to order. If you don’t know what to order, just ask for a recommendation.
I have heard so much about Scuba Junkie, so I was decided to see them in the morning. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out the way I planned. Much as I would like to, I only had time to see where they were before I had to take off.
Their office and backpacker lodge is close by Mabul Cafe, and they offer daily trips for scuba divers to Sipadan and Mabul islands. These are not the only islands they go to, as there are many more islands around the Sipidan area. Interestingly, they also operate a resort in Mabul Island, and a backpacker lodge in Semporna town.
Scuba Junkie Backpacker
Scuba Junkie operates a backpacker lodge in Semporna town offering accommodations at only RM15, if you are scuba diving with them. From dorm rooms to individual rooms, with satellite television and complimentary breakfast. Next door, is the Scuba Junkie bar, where you can get a cold beer and a pizza in the evening.
Just meters away is the dock where their boats are berthed, where your adventures to Sipadan and Mabul islands begin. If you are staying in Semporna, their daily dive trips departs at 8.00am, and returns in the afternoon. Alternatively, if you want to dive at Sipadan Island you need to be stay at their Mabul Beach Resort.
There is a new inn in the area named Sipadan Inn. This inn offers air-conditioned rooms from RM 84.00 onwards. More comfortable than most inns in Semporna, and at a very convenient location, good for those in Semporna for business.
Giant supermarket is there as well, along with a number of other retailers. So you can find accommodations, restaurants, tour operators and supermarket all within a block area.
Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia flies to Tawau daily, and from Tawau Airport, you can take a taxi to Semporna. Coaches travel directly from Kota Kinabalu city to Semporna daily, these are air-conditioned and the trip takes about 9 hours. Coaches cost a lot less than air tickets but you lose a day just traveling.
