Likas Public Park

The RM 3.7 million Taman Likas Public Park is now opened to the public. The park, 7.6 acres of it, stretches along the beach at Tun Fuad Stephens Road (Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens), Likas Bay. This popular new park is complete with amenities such as public toilets and car parks. This newly completed park adds to the beauty of Likas Bay and complements other developments in the area.

Visitors to the newly completed Taman Likas Public Park are to refrain from open-burning BBQ, at least until the BBQ pits are built. City Hall officials informed the public that doing so is strictly prohibited, offenders will be fined RM 500.00. The reasons given are:

  • The recreational park is a public area, open-burning BBQ poses a hazard to other park visitors.
  • Open burning BBQ leaves behind rubbish such as charcoal, and other debris.
  • Open burning BBQ causes damage to tree roots in the area, some of the trees are decades old.
  • Risk of fire in windy and dry conditions.

While I enjoy BBQ and agree that it is good fun, open burning BBQ (that is when you just put charcoal on the ground and light up) is hazardous and should not be allowed in public places and beaches. So I hope our Kota Kinabalu residents and visitors will do their part in keeping this Likas Public Park clean and safe. A beauty and clean park along a beautiful stretch of beach is a wonderful thing. Let’s not screw this up.

Likas Beach has always been popular with the locals. I practically grew up on this beach myself, so it’s nice to see it modernized and transformed. It still retains the charm of the way it used to be, but with some much needed amenities like rest areas, parking and rubbish bins.

City Hall should provide signage to inform the public what the rules are. To keep the place clean, they should provide ample rubbish bins. Personally, I feel that there are a lack of signage in public parks and beaches, including Tanjung Aru Beach. What signage there is, are often subject to vandalism or graffiti. Hopefully, it won’t be the case this time.
