Taragang Rasuk by Atama
Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan
I heard this song for the first time yesterday while I was in G-Mart Tuaran. The DJ was playing it, and it is a modern version of a traditional Kadazan song. This is a mix of traditional and hip-hop rap music. So, I just had to ask the DJ what the title of the song was. In Kadazan, Taragang Rasuk means Red Dress. I guess, it is something like The Woman In Red.
As we are about to celebrate Kamaatan or Harvest Festival, I wanted to feature some local music on my blog. Take a listen, I hope you like it. As much as I can figure out, this version was released in 2007. In case I got it wrong, please post the correct date as a comment.
Personally, I like this modern version, but I am aware that some purists hated it. The original song came out in the late seventies by John Gaisah (I think), and it has maintained its popularity up until today. This is the English/Kadazan version by Atama. There is also a Kadazan hip-hop version, and that’s the one he got flamed on.
By the way, make your way to Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) in Penampang to join the Harvest Festival celebration. It’s on 30th and 31st May 2009. There will be cultural shows and activities, great photography opportunities, and the finale of the Unduk Ngadau (Ethnic Beauty Pageant).
P.S. To all local artists and music producers, contact me if you want to feature your songs on my website.
