Festivals Of Malaysia – Hari Raya

Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri to all my friends and readers of www.AboutSabah.com!

This is one of the biggest festival in Malaysia, known to the rest of the world as Ramadan. The best reason to live in Sabah and Malaysia is the national and racial integration where we can celebrate with our friends from all walks of life. You cannot help but be grateful to be living in this paradise of peace and beauty.

What’s not to love about culture and festivals? We have all the colors of life, the music, the food, and the business opportunities. Especially the food. This is the best time to experience the taste of Malay home-cooking, where it seems that every home has their specialty dish and secret recipe.

Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri

Food Stalls Everywhere
For the past month, you are surrounded by food stalls everywhere you go. In the morning, there is nothing there, but come the afternoon from 4.00pm onwards, food stalls spring up everywhere. In Kota Kinabalu city, in all the towns outside the city. They are deep-frying, roasting and cooking – fish, chicken, beef, lamb, martabak (a type of pancake wrap with meat and vegetables), spring rolls and more. Nasi Lemak – always a favorite of mine, and for once, I can get my angels to help with carrying the shopping.

Seriously, there are more food than you can sample. Lots of desserts and sweets, ice drinks and iced desserts, cakes and buns.

Open House
What really ties everyone together is the concept of Open House. During Hari Raya, we visit friends and families. During this visits, people are dressed in new clothes, gifts are exchanged and there are plenty of food available. Basically, you just talk and eat. Then you go visit another friend and the process starts again. When I used to work in retail, we would go to as many houses as we can, and we would bring everyone over during lunch and dinner break. Open houses typically go on for the whole week, so we get to hang out with the people we work with outside of work.

When the friends who celebrate Hari Raya return to work, they would bring homemade cookies and snacks to the office, so everyone else get a chance to try their cooking. It is no exaggeration that these cookies taste better than any you can buy.

Once again, Selamat Hari Raya Adilfitri to everyone.
