Earth Hour 2012 On 31 March 2012
Yes! Earth Hour is here again. Needlessly to say, we would really like to see everyone do their part in reducing consumption of electricity. Earth Hour is tomorrow, 31st March 2012, 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
There are no reasons why we cannot extend Earth Hour at your home or even practice good energy management throughout the year.
What I would really like to see is the retail outlets, hotels and restaurants, entertainment outlets come up with ways to reduce power consumption while complying with safety regulations for public areas. If it reduces your operating costs without impacting on your customers comfort, why not?
Energy Consumption During Earth Hour
According to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), the utility provider in Sabah, the energy savings during Earth Hour are as follows:
- Earth Hour 2009 energy savings – 30MW of electricity
- Earth Hour 2010 energy savings – 50MW of electricity
- Earth Hour 2011 energy savings – 20MW of electricity
While the energy saving is less, we have to take into account that there are more buildings now than there were in 2009. It seems that the more we build, the more we consume. This makes it even more important for us to practice – Reuse, Recycle, Reduce.
Climate change is happening. We have to find ways we can reduce the impact on the climate and the environment. Otherwise, all the conservation effort in Sabah and throughout Malaysia will be for naught. Modern lifestyle demands the consumption of energy. We use it to light our streets and homes, power our electronic devices and to cool our homes. The one thing we cannot do without in Sabah is air-conditioning. Anybody else noticed how hot it has been this week?
