Nexus Resort Karambunai Sabah

Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai in Sabah is one of my favorite resorts. It has the largest stretch of beach for any resort in Sabah, has a lagoon for water sports and activities, a 18 hole championship golf course and club house, and the Borneo Spa. Beach side swimming pool, restaurants, a pub, and activities throughout the day to keep you occupied.

On a recent weekend at the resort, we spent just about every moment in the swimming pool or on the beach. There were quite a number of guests staying at the resort, but not so many that it felt crowded. On a resort like Nexus Karambunai, there are guests from all over the world. My kids were in a world of their own, and had a blast.

This resort is about 30km away from Kota Kinabalu City, and almost 40km from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). Travel time from KKIA is about 40 minutes, and if you are traveling by taxi, it should cost RM70 to RM80 from the city. Getting out of the city can be a hassle at peak hour, but when you get to Sepangar Bay, the scenery starts to get interesting.

Traveling to and from the resort will get expensive, a day trip to the city or 1 Borneo will cost up to RM180. It would probably be best to chill out a day or two at the resort, then go on to the next resort or hotel and onto the next stop for your vacation. For those living here, this is a great place to really get away and unwind.

Travel Tip 1: If you have an international license, you can hire a car for a day. The route from the resort to 1 Borneo is pretty straight forward, and you can get to see more of Kota Kinabalu. Have a meal outside the resort, it costs a lot less and you get to experience more of Sabah.

Travel Tip 2: You can hire a car from Indah Permai, a cluster of shoplots on the right hand side of the road on the way to the resort. Don’t pay more than RM200 for a car. Be advised that these are local rental companies and sometimes the service leaves a lot to be desired. I am told to avoid OG Tour & Rent A Car Sdn Bhd in Indah Permai, their service deserves to be on the wall of shame.

Travel Tip 3: Pick up everything you need before you go to the resort, and do your shopping in supermarkets or sundry shops. There are 2 supermarkets in Sepangar on the way to the resort, and plenty of shops. Buy snacks, water and soft drinks.

Nexus Resort Rooms
There are some 400 rooms in the resort. We stayed in the Ocean Wing, which consists of rooms in a 4 story building. The sound of the sea was amazing, relaxing and plays like your favorite concerto. The rooms are soothing, with a splash of modern chic. King sized beds, flat screen LCD television, high speed internet access, fridge and kettle. The room had a balcony which faces the sea, deck chairs to relax in, especially during the afternoon where it gets too hot to go out on the beach.

The marbled bathroom comes with a full set of toiletries, and everything worked as it should. Flip-flops are provided, so you have slippers to walk in the sand with. You can go barefoot, but the ground gets hot in the late morning and afternoons.

If you can, get the Borneo rooms. It’s a lot bigger and more comfortable. I stayed there when I had a membership with this resort, although that quite some time ago. If you choose the villas, they look nice but they are 2 km away! You have to call for a shuttle to come pick you up, and do not expect them to arrive promptly.

Fun Activities
Staying in the Ocean Wing or Borneo rooms, puts you in the middle of the resort. Walk out the door, a short stroll to the elevators and you are there. There are plenty of daily activities arranged by the resort, everything from batik painting, cultural activities, games, cycling and sports. You can also go to the fitness centre and work out on your own. Take a barefoot stroll on the beach, go swimming or just explore the resort and the surrounding natural environment.

My buddy from England spent most of his time reading by the swimming pool. Or you could order a drink in the lobby lounge, The Horizon. It is on the same level as the reception area, and like it’s name, it overlooks the horizon. The lobby lounge is cool and comfortable, you might as well order a cocktail and enjoy the view of the beach, and the sound of the sea.
