A reader asked me if I knew of any nice hotel in Beaufort, and this is the motel I always stay at whenever I’m in town. The MelDe hotel is in Beaufort town, just across the road to where I work. There are coffee shops just downstairs, and the food in Beaufort is quite good.
The new development of shophouses in Beaufort is across the river, on the route to Sipitang. I drove there on my last visit, saw the usual retail outlets and banks. Not much different from the business outlets everywhere.

- MelDe Hotel Beaufort
The reception desk is located on the first floor, so you take the first staircase on the block. For the first time visitor, it is easy to miss the entrance. I’ve done a time or two myself, and had to walk across the road to see where the hotel was. But once you know it, it is hard to miss. Beaufort town isn’t so big that you can get lost in.

The Room
Unless I am mistaken the prices start from RM60 for a single, and below RM100 for a double. I have always found the rooms to be clean and odour-free, which is why I stay there. Although the carpet in the room is worn, new hotel slippers are provided for every guest. The rooms are just big enough for you to sleep in, and are not designed for guests to spend much time in the rooms. The bed takes up most of the space, along with the dressing table, and television table.
All rooms come with a hair dryer, which I have never used because the you need to bring your own adapter plug. Why do they even bother to place a hair dryer in the room without an adapter? Anyway, one of my colleagues said the one in her room didn’t work.

- Single room
The rooms come with attached bathrooms, showers only. Toiletries such as toothbrush, shampoo, shower foam, shower cap and bath towel is provided. The shower is heated, and powerful. So at the least, you do get a nice shower. My advice is to bring your own shampoo and shower cream. While the bath towel are clean and fluffy, it might be a good idea to bring your own as well.
A complimentary 500ml bottle of drinking water is provided and a sachet of milo. For hot water, you get it from the receptionist. There are also cup noodles, and packet drinks such as soya bean drink in the room. These are not free and will cost you RM3.00 each, which you can buy for half that price in a supermarket.
The bed is quite comfortable, but was a little too soft for me. This is a personal preference as I need a firmer bed. Other people have had no complaints about the bed. The sheets are clean, and white. The pillows are soft and fluffy. In place of blankets, the hotel uses duvets, or comforters as it is commonly called in Sabah.
Eating Out In Beaufort
Beaufort is quite well-known for its Chinese cooking (if you are Chinese, that is), with many small coffee shop, restaurants in Kota Kinabalu. Restoran Kim Wah, directly beneath MelDe hotel is quite popular with the locals. Always ask for their recommendations and they will tell you what is fresh today. Prices are about what you would expect, being slightly cheaper than in Kota Kinabalu.

Can you give me your latest phone number or email? It’s hard for me to update information about the hotel
