Open Sea Fishing In Sabah

What do a pair of successful business owners do for recreation? They turn their passion into a fun and profitable past-time. I have known some anglers who will go out to sea at a moments notice, and they seem to be a happy and adventurous lot. But these guys not only bought their own boat, they turned it into a business taking anglers from all over Malaysia and Asia out to sea.

If you are interested in open water fishing, and spending the entire day out at sea, keep reading. These are the guys who will take you out in the waters around Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and all the way to Labuan. Or around the islands of Manatani, a group of isolated islands northwest of Kota Belud. How about a chance to fish in the deep sea off Layang Layang? Or fish off the coast of Kudat, the Tip Of Borneo?

On Board The 7 Star

You will be angling on board The 7 Star, a vessel 65 feet by 14 feet, registered in Malaysia. It the capacity to handle up to 12 anglers, including bunks for overnight trips. Modern amenities such as toilet and showers are included. It also has a functional kitchen, and a stocked beverage counter. You can go out to sea for days on this boat, having a great time fishing and feasting on an amazing variety of freshly caught fish.

Fancy fishing off Pulau Tiga (Tiga Island), the Survivor Island from the hit reality series? The cool factor about hiring an angling boat is that you can take a break from fishing, and go sight-seeing from an unique perspective. How about the mysterious Mengalum Island, northwest of Kota Kinabalu city? Not very many locals have heard of it, much less travelled there. Yet, these islands are safe to go to and have modern resort facilities. And the fact that you are fishing in clear waters off these islands.

The boat is skippered by the experienced Captain Moktar. And equipped with satellite phone, GPS and sonar. From what I understand, the sonar is used to find fish. They will provide the bait, but you have to bring your own rods.

What’s In The Sea
Here are plenty of photographs to show you what can be caught. Look at the size of them fish! Seriously, if you managed a haul like that, you have thousands of Ringgit worth of fish. This is what draws anglers from Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong to fish in Sabah, as well as the occasional Europeans.

Angling Boat For Hire
Most people who hire this boat will book its services for a couple of days. Because of the distances and time to get to the fishing sites, the shortest hire is for 2 days. Basically, everything is included in the package. Just let them know your budget and needs, and how long you want to go out to sea for. They will make sure the arrangements are taken care off. If you are flying in to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, they can arrange the pick-up from the airport to your hotel, and pick-up to the boat.

The boat is based in Kota Kinabalu city, Sabah. All excursions will be from Kota Kinabalu city, to wherever the fishing is good. The cost of a fishing adventure depends on the number of days you want to out to sea, the number of people in your group and what your other needs are. You will get back what you pay in fishes caught, see the video.

just to inquire about a trip to fish sabah waters

  • adrian says:

@ Michael, you can always email them directly. Or give them a call. They will be glad to chat with you.

  • NeverAgain says:

Moktar is one hot tempered skipper if you happened to cross his thinking and path! For example, if you wanna ask him nicely to move to another location after no fish in one location, he will not be happy and just tell you, “Saya tau apa mau buat. Jangan ajar saya!!”.

Steven should reprimand him for this. Experienced yes but Moktar has an attitude problem! Not once but many occasions! Just ask any anglers that have gone with him before! Even the deckhands know – “Tu Moktar kuat marah oh”!!!

  • adrian says:

@ NeverAgain I am sorry to hear that. While I am not involved in Seven Star, I will pass this comment to Steven and Lee. Most likely they will have seen this comment here. Let’s hope something positive comes out of this.

Btw, how was the fishing itself? Were the fishes biting?

  • NeverAgain says:

As I have said, Moktar is a good skipper! No question about that. And like most fishing situations with other skippers, there are good and bad trips.

The only problem is his bad temper and huge ego. If he realises this and correct himself, then all will be good and well and makes the trip a happy fishing outing!

  • Steven says:

@NeverAgain. Hi! I am Steven the boat owner of 7STAR.

Appreciate your comment and suggestion on our skipper. I do agree that Mokhtar has an attitude problem once awhile…but who doesn’t? My sincere apology about his misbehaviour towards you.

It would be better if you can provide me your last fishing trip date so that I can review back the actual situation with Mokhtar and give a good advise to him.

Thank you for chatering our boat for your previous fishing trip.

  • NeverAgain says:

    Hi Steven,

The less said the better. And I have moved on.

And since you are aware already, then it will be necessary for you to monitor the situation from now on. (One idea is to implement a feedback system from anglers once they are back to shore and this way, Moktar might be conscious and thus will be on his toes. A win-win situation, I believe.)

    Thanks.

First off I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Kudos!

  • adrian says:

Sometimes you just got to do, especially if you are getting paid and the dateline is approaching :)

    Writing Tips:
    1) Figure out your angle or story line first.
    2) Starting typing. Most times this is all you have to do.
    3) Use photos and describe the photos in your article.
