Sabah is rich with eco-treasures, from mountain ranges to amazing diving spots, tropical islands and unique wildlife. Orang utans, Mount Kinabalu, Sipadan, Rafflesia flower, and Prosboscis monkeys. All of these are easily accessible, only hours away. But it is best to spend a few days to really experience Sabah’s natural wonders.
There is nothing quite like getting away from it all and spend a few days on Mount Kinabalu, or on an island resort. For those who only have a few days to sight-see all of Sabah, the Klias River Cruise is highly recommended. This is a good alternative to Sukau in the East coast of Sabah.
What You Will Experience
The Klias river cruise is a popular day trip with locals and tourists. On this cruise, you will see the Proboscis monkey in the Klias wetlands. The Proboscis monkey is endemic to Borneo. The cruise starts in the afternoon and ends in the evening. It is easy to identify a Proboscis monkey, it is the one with a long nose and a bulging belly.
The cruise starts at 4.00pm in the afternoon, it is about a 2 hour boat ride that takes you into the wetlands. Soon, you will see monkeys and other wildlife in and around the trees. Also watch out for long-tailed macaques, silver-leaf monkeys, otters and crocodiles that are known to lurk in the mangrove waters. Visitors will be delighted to spot some winged species here including the kingfisher, eagle, hornbill, gray heron, and white heron.
You return for to the jetty for a sunset dinner of fresh seafood. There is one more cruise after the sunset. On this cruise you will see the spectacular sight of thousands of fireflies lighting up the riverbanks. “Like fairy lights on Christmas trees”, is the usual comment. These unique insects flicker in unison amid the mangrove trees and transforms the night into a magical wonderland.
Listen to the sounds of wildlife in the dark, then tilt your head back and see the millions of stars twinkling back at you from the pitch black sky. The night cruise is a short one, and it’s time to get back to Kota Kinabalu city.
Accommodations are available if you wish to stay the night, and go out for a cruise in the morning. The morning cruise starts at 6.00am. The accommodations are traditional style Rungus Longhouses, a terrace house with air-conditioned rooms, and attached bathrooms is also available. Ask about the Borneo Proboscis River Lodge. Another option is the Monkey Tops Safari which is a eco-lodge, including Bird Watch Tower, Dining Hall, Sundeck, Fish Spa and space for 300 visitors.
Klias Wetlands is situated 100km south of Kota Kinabalu, in the Beaufort district. Transfer from Kota Kinabalu city is about one and a half-hours. Transport will be provided by the tour operator you book with. Hi-Tea and Dinner is also included in the cost of the trip.
For a day-trip, expect to pay between RM 180 to RM 200. Transfer to and from the city, boat cruise and dinner is included.
Wear casual clothes, bring along a pair of binoculars, a good digital camera and insect repellent.
