PADI Bubblemaker Experience For Kids
We had many families from all over wanting to learn to dive, or just leisure diving, in Kota Kinabalu with Easter being a busy time. One of our favourite diving experiences with families is when their child experiences diving for the first time via the PADI Bubblemaker Experience (for 8 to 9 years old). They are absolutely amazed by it and have no idea they are only diving up to 2m. They love seeing all the different fish so close, especially Nemo! We had two tiny tots (~1mth) take part in a PADI Bubblemaker Experience. One of them, Andrew, was paired with our very tall PADI Instructor James – it was very sweet and funny to see them diving together. We look forward to helping many more children and families experience scuba diving and snorkeling together.
Actress Emma Thompson and Family Learn to Dive with Borneo Dream
It is always exciting to be able to share our piece of Jewel on this side of the coast to our visitors. It was also a real pleasure to have actor Greg Wise along with his actress wife, Emma Thompson and their daughter, Gaia diving with us. Emma and Gaia learn to dive with us through our PADI Open Water Diver course. Over the 3 days, Emma rekindled her love for diving (she took up her PADI OW course again after years of non-diving) and it was especially special for her to do it with her daughter. While Emma and Gaia learn to dive, her husband, Actor Greg Wise went on some wreck adventures with the Dream team. Diving Usukan WWII Wreck and Mayne Rock, Greg already dived Sipadan many years ago later went on with his now “family of divers” to Sipadan again. We helped them create their dream diving trip and other nature adventures during their stay in Sabah.
Pulau Tiga and Night Diving
From April towards October, it is also known as the “Dry Season” in Sabah. This would also mean plenty more of diving to do with sunny days ahead and sea, flat as a pancake?
We had our first Pulau Tiga trip this year just few weeks ago and from the trip report (and photos) Pulau Tiga diving is amazing. Nudiebranch and Barracudas with nice visibility, we got some serial 75 minutes divers (or fish?) taking their time enjoying their dive.
We also jumped on the opportunity to run a Night dive on the 26th April and again, we’re glad we did. Gil Wooley, a diving friend came diving with us and got up close and personal with the critters he found. He was also kind enough to share his photos for us to share with you here.
What’s New with the Dream Team?
What else is new with the Dream Team? Eugene Dominic Philip joined the dream team last November, 2010 as a PADI Divemaster. With support from Borneo Dream, Eugene completed his PADI IDC (with flying colours!) in March and Gene “Genie” is now a PADI OWSI. Congratulations to Gene Genie!
Another new addition to the team would be PADI OWSI – Daniel Broadhurst. An experienced dive instructor originally from Australia, Dan made Kota Kinabalu, Sabah his home years ago. Having worked with a few dive operators within the city, Dan knows the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park like the back of his hand. He is also a natural comedian on and off the boat. There’s never a dull moment with Dan. Really! Find out more about the Dream Team here!
Frederica the Frog Fish
Our Team are always getting compliments from customers for their keen eyes and being able to find some of the most fascinating and unusual marine life for customers during their dives. One of our more recent finds has been a lovely pale blue Frog Fish in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Frederica, as she is affectionately known by our team, tends to use one coral reef we visit as her home and is often around to say “hello” as we pass by with divers.
Frog Fish are renowned for their camouflage and mimicry – to conceal themselves from predators or mimic a potential meal to it’s prey. Frederica may have not read this part of her guidebook to being a Frogfish as she has often been known to stand aloft a pink Barrel Sponge to perfectly contrast against her delicate pale blue body colour. We’re convinced she does this when she sees our team approaching so they can go and give her some friendly attention.
We now have a growing number of special little friends we come across on a regular basis.
A Very Rare Sighting in TARP – Lesser Spotted Leopard Fish
We like to have some fun with our customers – especially those who have dived with us a few times before. We had one of our regular customers, Alan, join us for scuba diving in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) during his first trip to Kota Kinabalu, KK, Sabah this year. Alan was a good sport and (with no pressure whatsoever . . . .) agreed to wear a leopard skin Lycra body suit over his wet suit for a dive. Alan then joined one of our guided dives along a coral reef near Pulau Sapi in TARP. You should have seen the faces on a group of divers who passed by and saw Alan in his Leopard skin outfit. Priceless!
Getting to know our Team – meet Miss Edrie Juce
Tell us a bit about yourself?
Another retired party girl who now sleeps by 9pm (usually 8.20pm) and up by 5am daily. I was previously a freelance photographer but rediscovered water and fingers crossed hoping that someone and anyone would buy me an UW casing for my Nikon D80 so I can take it to play with me underwater. Other than that, almost a glutton.
And your role in the Dream Team?
Sales & Marketing exec. for the Dream team.
What is the best part of the job?
Getting people wet! But really, meeting a lot of interesting people with different backgrounds and language. Not being able to speak theirs/mine language but we still enjoy a good dive together. Where else can you do just that. Passion breaks the barrier they say.
And the worst?
Being extremely dry!
What do customers like the most about you?
The fact that I am invisible! Okay, I will need to ask them if/when I see them
What is one of your funniest memories from working with Borneo Dream?
Plenty. Most embarrassing (now why am I telling the world this?) would be falling on top on the tanks, scraping the skin on my knees. Almost looked like I did it intentionally.
What makes you a Dream girl?
I work and dive and sleep in my Dream. (Get it?)
Describe yourself in 3 words?
I am special!
How would the team describe you in 3 words?
EDRIE IS SPECIAL.
