Borneo Dream Newsletter October 2010

The following newsletter is reprinted with kind permission from Borneo Dream. Scuba diving around Sabah waters is amazing, with many dive sites within easy reach of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. They are very active on Facebook, regularly updating underwater diving news and offering new courses for the experienced and novice divers.

Introduction
Welcome to the first newsletter from Borneo Dream.

As customers of Borneo Dream we thought you might like to hear about what we have been up to, what’s new as well as find out more about interesting sights and stories during our recent diving trips and courses.

It’s been a busy year so far for the Dream Team. Our New RIB arrived in April, a 9m x 3m dream machine. With a cruising speed of 30 knots we can now reach our long distance dive sites in half the time. It’s the only RIB to be used for recreational diving in Sabah, Borneo so it stands out from the crowd a little! The addition of our RIB now creates the ‘Borneo Dream Fleet’, alongside our catamaran Borneo Dream 3, and will be used for our offshore diving trips and for groups diving in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

Here’s a little bit about the specification:

  • It has a cruising speed of 30 knots and a top speed of approx. 45 knots!!
  • It is fitted with the latest navigation equipment – GPS Plotter, Sounder and Sidescan Sonar.
  • It has twin 150hp Yamaha 4 stroke engines.
  • There will be seating for 12 persons (on jockey seats – comfortable and safe)

It will half the time taken to reach our long distance, offshore dive sites like Mayne Rock, Pulau Tiga, Usukan Wrecks and Mantanani. We’ve also used it to offer fast RIB rides between the islands – Billy likes to make our customers scream! Our RIB has been used many times now and brings an added dimension to diving from Kota Kinabalu. Hopefully you’ll get a chance to ride on it in the future.

During July – August we certified 70 UK students as PADI Open Water Divers staying at Camp Mantanani (run by Camp Borneo). We also look forward to working with Camp Borneo to certify 180 students as PADI Open Water Divers during July – August 2011.

New Products – BSAC Courses
We were upgraded to a BSAC Training Dive Centre earlier in October and now offer BSAC training courses – from BSAC Ocean Diver course to the BSAC Dive Leader course.

Borneo Dream was the first, and only, BSAC Resort Dive Centre in Sabah, Borneo. Early in October we were upgraded to a BSAC Training Dive Centre – another first in Sabah. We now offer training covering BSAC Ocean Diver, BSAC Sorts Diver and BSAC Dive Leader courses.

The British Sub Aqua Club (or BSAC) is the UK’s leading dive club. BSAC is not only popular in the UK, it also has an extensive range of Internationally recognised BSAC centre and clubs around the world. BSAC focuses on providing a social, family-friendly club and dive centre network which offers a great mix of quality training and regular diving where divers can learn and progress at their own pace.

Kota Kinabalu is an ideal location in South East Asia for BSAC Divers wanting to progress their diver training. Kota Kinabalu is easily accessible with a range of airlines flying here from neighbouring countries such as Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Perth Australia, Taiwan and more. This makes it an ideal choice for a short break to complete modules towards a BSAC certification in the tropical waters of Kota Kinabalu along the west coast of Sabah.

Alternatively, if you are a BSAC Diver traveling from the United Kingdom (or further a field) for a longer holiday to Sabah you can choose to complete one – two days diving in Kota Kinabalu during your holiday and complete modules towards your next BSAC certification level. This enables you to make the most of your time in Sabah – seeing the wildlife, diving at Sipadan, trekking – and progress your BSAC diver training at the same time. Easy!

We can run diving courses in nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park all year round – so any time is BSAC diver training time. Offering BSAC courses will increase the range of dive courses our customers can choose from – PADI, SDI, TDI, IANTD and BSAC. Meaning we can meet the needs of more divers and new divers. Interested? We ran Rebreather training courses throughout the year. We were lucky enough to have Roger Munns and Jason Isley from Scubazoo joining us for a wreck diving trip in July. During this dive, they shot a video of two of our Rebreather Students – Neil & Angela – with Billy diving the wrecks. The video and photos they produced from this trip are amazing.

We welcomed back many repeat visits by our customers and continued to make friends with many new customers. We also welcomed James and Edrie to the Dream Team.

We hope you like our promotions and that you benefit from them. Don’t forget to follow us on facebook to find out more about we are up to and planned events – join us on Facebook.com.

If you have any ideas for our next newsletter, just let us know.
Hope to see you again soon,
Billy & Joanne
